Definition
A cable landing station, or CLS, is a shore facility where a subsea fiber optic cable connects to terrestrial networks. It houses optical transmission equipment, power feeding equipment for cable systems, monitoring, security, and network handoff points.
Subsea cables carry most intercontinental internet traffic. The landing station is where that ocean system becomes part of the land network and can reach metros, carriers, exchanges, and data centers.
Why it matters
Landing stations shape network geography. Regions with multiple landings can have stronger international connectivity and route diversity. For AI infrastructure, proximity to fiber routes and landings can reduce avoidable distance, though the full terrestrial path still matters.
How it works
A subsea cable comes ashore through a protected landing path and into the station. Optical equipment terminates or amplifies signals and connects to land networks. Many cable systems also draw electrical power from landing stations to feed undersea repeaters.
Not every landing station is a major compute hub. Nearby carrier hotels or data centers often handle broader interconnection. The key question is how the landing connects into the regional network fabric.
Common misconceptions
A cable landing station is not the same as a data center. Its primary role is cable termination and handoff.
Being near a landing station does not automatically guarantee low latency. Routing, peering, congestion, and terrestrial fiber paths still decide real delay.
